The name Tarot of Marseille was created in 1856 by the French card historian Romain Merlin, then spread by the famous French cartomancers Eliphas Levi, Grard Encausse and Paul Marteau. It describes the beautiful designs being made in the city of Marseilles, which was the centre of playing card manufacture at the time, and the imagery has inspired tarot deck design ever since.
